principals message
Greetings Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier School,
It’s been a good while since I’ve written to you. But it has been quite busy! This morning we held graduation pictures for both kindergarten and eighth grades!
On Monday March 6, an assembly was called for the afternoon to honor the second place overall finish of the St. Francis Xavier School Academic Junior High Decathlon Team and their coaches, Mrs. Rose Sorensen, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick and Michelle Flynn, and Mr. Ferde (Jose) Sanchez! The coaches and students were thrilled about the recent competition results and now focus their efforts on Saturday April 1. The team will head to Sacramento, CA to compete in the CA State AJHD finals! We are so proud of the students and their coaches for their efforts! I know I speak for the entire SFX community when we say GO LANCERS! The best of luck to you in Sacramento!
We also acknowledged the second grade students who recently made their First Reconciliation on Saturday March 4! During Mrs. Clegg’s absence, we have had the luxury of having Mrs. Jessup guide the second graders in the curriculum, but during Religion and sacramental preparation classes Mrs. Wargo has joined the class to help the children get ready for both First Reconciliation and Eucharist! We are grateful to both teachers for their support of the second graders and their families. When interviewed about their experiences, one boy, Joseph Caplan, explained that at first it was a little bit scary! But then it was fun he added! Out of the mouths of babes we are reminded that while it might be a bit scary to repent, the process allows us to rediscover the joy in our lives!
And we celebrated the Boys A Basketball team’s recent semi-final win and Championship Game birth in the CYO Invitational Basketball Tournament. The boys played the championship game at Loyola Marymount University on Wednesday March 8 and were victorious! They championed Pomona Catholic by 17 points! It was a great game and an exciting result for Coaches Mike Graceffo and Carlos Perez, not to mention the boys! CONGRATULATIONS LANCERS!!!
Congratulations are also in order to the Class of 2017! Of those applying to Catholic high schools, they received acceptance letters from Providence High School, Notre Dame High School, Loyola High School, Bishop Alemany High School, Mayfield Senior High School, and Immaculate Heart High School! There might be one or two more schools I am leaving out, but it is clear that many of our graduates are well positioned to continue their schooling in Catholic schools! Of course, congratulations to our graduates-to-be for attending Burbank and Burroughs High Schools!
Presently I am working with the faculty on staffing for the 2017-18 school year. You will be apprised in the weeks to come about next school year’s staff! Also, I am awaiting the Department of Catholic Schools calendar template, which assists me in planning the next school year. You will also be apprised of start and end dates for the next school year, as well as vacation periods.
Thank you for absorbing Friday March 10 as the final professional development day for the faculty and me. We will address yet another chapter of the school’s WCEA/WASC Self-Study. We have our dates for 2017-18 three-day visit! We will welcome the Visiting Committee on Tuesday through Thursday March 6, 7, and 8, 2018!
Don’t forget to buy your tickets to the upcoming Boots and Bling Dinner Auction! Stacey Stanley and her dedicated group of planners are making the final push to help us make this annual event a momentous success!
This evening at the final PTO General Meeting, we will hear from the Dinner Auction Committee about where things are in readying our community for an awesome night of fun, dining, and auction bidding! Of course we will hear from our PTO Board President, Bill Wickersheim and others to update us on the fundraising year. Also, we will hear from a guest speaker about cyber-safety! We are fortunate to host Mr. Abilio Lopez, Investigator for the State of California, who will address Internet safety and ways that parents can help protect their children from the perils of on-line stalkers and other nefarious persons.
This afternoon we celebrate the high achievement of our dear students in grades four through eighth at the Honors Assembly in Holy Cross Hall at 2:00 P.M. It is always amazing to celebrate the children’s academic accomplishments.
Lastly, I will send as a separate email blast this afternoon news of the final trimester’s Robotics classes. Stem and More have outlined some new programs for the children. Now that I have ensured that all interested families have had an opportunity to participate in Robotics, enrollment for this session and others to will be through the company. The email to be sent later will outline the course content, dates and times, and most importantly, the contact number to call for enrollment. The target start date is Friday March 17, but if we notice that enrollment is lagging we may need to begin Friday March 24. We’ll see how the classes look by Wednesday of next week.
During our Lenten journey let us pray for one another to overcome the obstacles in life that hold us back from experiencing God’s love for each one of us. We make these prayers in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Sincerely,
Paul Sullivan, Ed.D.
Principal, SFX School
