Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier School,
I hope the recent heat wave hasn’t wilted your spirits! This too shall pass. We have had to stay indoors the past few days due to the heat and poor air quality. Windy weather will undoubtedly continue to create unhealthy air-quality conditions in the wake of the fire. We will be on guard for such occasions.
We are anxiously awaiting news of the Girls A Volleyball team’s playoff berth. The team has made it to the field of 64 and will more than likely play this weekend at a high school gym to be announced later this afternoon. We will announce the information as soon as we learn it! Go Lancers!
The Girls B Volleyball teams are doing quite well. While we had to cancel the match scheduled for Monday 10/23 between SFX 1 and SFX 2 due to the heat, SFX 2 will travel to Sherman Oaks to play St. Francis DeSales today. The make-up date for the canceled match is scheduled for Thursday 11/2! Come out to see our fifth and sixth grade girls play their best volleyball! Quite a few matches remain before the season ends. Announcements will made made to support the teams! Go Lancers!
Boys B Flag Football is going well. While the boys have a record of 1-2 they are determined to get back in the hunt for a winning season. The lads play this Saturday at Noon at Brace Canyon Park. Go Lancers!
Both Mock Trial and Academic Decathlon are in full swing! The Mock Trial Team will present the defense in a murder trial on Monday 11/6 at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. Our prosecution team goes for the jugular the following week, Monday 11/13. The decathletes began the first of several early morning practices today. The march to March 4 is officially underway. As one from South Boston would say, “These kids are wicked smart!” Go Lancers!
This Saturday is destined to be “spooktacular!” Family Activities Chair, Jason Murtha and his band of merry supporters will host the annual Trunk or Treat in Holy Cross Hall beginning at 6:30 PM. This event is always a joy for our younger students! They gather in the hall for some fun food and awesome dancing! The participating cars and trucks in the Trunk or Treat program are parked on the upper lot and decorated to the nines to invite visitors to inspect all of the costume themes! Visitors will also receive some CANDY!!! Of course the junior high students are also invited to attend! It will undoubtedly be a very fun evening. A friendly reminder for those who like to dress in scary attire, please don’t frighten the youngest students in attendance. We recall how impressionable young minds can be. We want everyone going home ready for bed in a good mood! Let’s avoid influencing any nightmares!
Tuesday October 31 is a NOON DISMISSAL day due to Halloween. In the morning, the Student Council will host the annual Halloween Parade, which begins at 10:45 AM. Please join us on the lower yard if your schedule permits to observe the many children who dress up to mark one of their favorite days of the year! Parking is available on the upper lot and is easily accessed via the west driveway. We hope to see you there!
Wednesday November 1 commemorates All Saints Day. The student body will celebrate Mass with Fr. Benny at 2:00 PM in the church. Please join us if you your schedule permits.
The faculty and I will attend the third professional development workshop at St. Mel’s School, Woodland Hills on Friday November 3. Please note that Friday November 3 is a NON-PUPIL DAY.
The teachers have employed many ideas gleaned from the workshops into their daily classroom routines. Chief among the ideas is the use of “objective boards.” Students and teachers review clearly stated objectives for each lesson throughout the day. The goal is to create clear understanding of what is being taught and learned in any given lesson. The more connected the children are to the objective of a lesson the more meaning they can derive from their participation in class.
The second benchmark window for STAR testing opens November 1 and runs through November 15. The teachers will schedule the testing sessions for their classes within the window at their discretion. Results will probably be available after the first trimester report card period. We are hopeful to observe excellent scores. The Department of Catholic Schools has set the lofty percentile score of 64 as a base benchmark. The score is set at the 64th percentile as a measure of college readiness, even for our youngest students. While nobody has a crystal ball to determine the extent of our students’ achievement through their adolescence, the research derived on our behalf from the DCS tells us that students scoring at or above the 64th percentile are on their way to academic accomplishment and success.
My dear parents, YOU have a lot to do with student scores too! Your continued support and engagement of your child’s development will always pay dividends. We at school support you. And the students, who know they are loved and supported both at home and at school, provide the rest! How blessed we are to be a Catholic learning community! We are part of the hundreds of years-old Catholic tradition of academic accomplishment! Be sure to encourage your child to take their time during testing sessions. While there are some students who loathe the process, they cannot do their best if they are rushing through the sessions. We see a time stamp on their sessions, so we’ll know if they take the testing seriously. Low scores and a time stamp of 9 min. 34 sec. explains a lot! So encourage your Johnnies and Suzies to take their time. Each test affords 35 minutes of time to take the tests. We thank you in advance!
Bob’s Big Boy Dinner Fundraiser is tonight, Wednesday October 25! Do you want onion rings or fries with that Super Big Boy Combo? Have fun with friends and family in support of our dear school!
Don’t forget Night at the Races, scheduled for Saturday November 4 in Holy Cross Hall! It is a very amusing evening to say the least! Where else can you bet on races that have already been run? Doors open at 6:30 PM. The bar is set up in a unique fashion. The drinks are excellent! You can pay to name a horse in any given race. And the idea is to use your funny-money to bet on the pre-recorded races, with the horses who have been uniquely christened by attendees (wait until you hear some of the names!), and winners place their names into a raffle for a variety of very impressive gift baskets. All proceeds go to supporting our dear parish! Fr. Benny is expecting you.
Let us pray for one another. The challenges raising a family are constant and our days can be filled with all sorts of obstacles. Let us pray for each other to patient, kind, aware, and sensitive to the needs of others. A simple kind word or gesture might be all it takes to help us through the rough patches. For those who are fighting illness, we ask God to deliver you to full health. For those who are sad, we ask the Holy Spirit to remind you of the joy of your life. For those who are unsettled, we ask God to bring you peace. For these things and more, we pray to the Lord.
Sincerely,
Paul Sullivan, Ed.D.

hALLOWEEN PARADE WORDS
Student Council Hosts Halloween Parade
Student Council Members are busy planning some fun activities for the Halloween Parade to be held Tuesday, October 31, 2017 beginning at 10:45 A.M. We are planning to have the Parade on the Lower School Yard. If it is too hot or rains, it will be held in Holy Cross Hall. All students may come to school dressed in their costumes. Extra items, or oversized costumes, may be added at recess time. Parents, please check, in advance, with your child’s homeroom teacher regarding any need to assist students in putting on any final touches before the Parade. Also, please remember the following guidelines for your child’s costume at school:
1. Masks may be included, however due to safety reasons, the children are to put them on only when it is time to parades around the yard.
2. Props may accompany your child's costume except for knives, guns, or any other weapon.
3. Please help your child choose an age appropriate costume as well as one which is supportive of Catholic School standards.

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier School,
I hope this message finds you well. The school year is off to a great beginning, and we are already half-way through the first trimester of school. The teachers are planning and teaching to the best of their abilities, the students are learning daily and ensconced in solid work routines to help them grow in body, mind and spirit!
Behaviorally, the children are doing well. We have had a few issues needing immediate accountability through detention, but I believe them to be typical, developmental issues that are easily corrected. The junior high students have recently signed Behavior Acknowledgement Memos of Understanding. The MOU makes them aware of the behavioral issues that will affect behavior grades if they do not address poor choices. The students are completely aware of the norms of behavior expected within their classes and may check in with their teachers about the behavior grade to make necessary improvements. After all, for the junior high students, it’s all about making honors at a reporting period. They are aware that they need the best report cards and track records to impress potential Catholic high school admissions departments. Moreover, the behavior grade in school helps them understand accountability and how to be a person of character.
This weekend we celebrate once again the St. Francis Xavier School Jog-A-Thon. I am thrilled to see our students take the leadership role in acquiring the needed pledge support to help the Parent/Teacher Organization meet the $55K threshold to the school’s operating budget. This fundraiser more than any other helps our students understand service to their school. While we focus a lot of attention on the prizes associated with JAT, let’s not forget that the real reason for this fundraiser is to encourage the children to support the financial objectives of the school and to learn about service to the greater good. Thank you parents for your support! We understand that a lot of the pledges come from your household income in addition to paying tuition and fees! But let’s not lose focus on the idea that JAT is all about the children supporting their dear school! I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday!
Mistakes! I’ve made a few! Okay, a lot! And I’m destined to make more! We’re only human after all! My friends let’s remember to offset initial misgivings and anger over matters around school with the gift of time. My office is always available to listen to you, a student, or a colleague about all matters associated with St. Francis Xavier. Schools at our level rely heavily on volunteer coaches and fundraising chairpersons. If and when a problem occurs and anger is the result, please take a 24 hour cooling-off period. In this manner, the immediate emotion of anger will not necessarily dictate the reconciliation efforts to make things better. We have had some unfortunate instances of anger dictating conversations with both staff and volunteers. I get it that we at school may make a mistake that causes a lot of consternation, but we cannot allow ourselves to devolve in hostile behavior. I know for a firm fact that we are all on the same team. But we must be honorable about resolving conflicts or perceived issues that stoke an angry response. So let’s use the 24 hour cooling off period to help us resolve problems.
Included in last week’s family envelope was information from the City of Burbank Animal Control. The recent mountain lion attack of a neighbor’s dog was verified through mountain lion DNA. I recall the dog in question. It resided in one of the houses that shares the property line with the long driveway on the west side of campus. It was a Weimaraner, if I’m not mistaken, which happens to be a big, athletic dog! I hope you had a chance to review the literature. The main point is to be aware of early morning arrivals and late pick-ups around school, particularly as we approach daylight savings time. It is not uncommon to see wildlife around campus. Please be aware of the children at the aforementioned times of the day. We want to ensure everyone’s safety. As we may already be aware, one coyote is typically not a problem, but a pack becomes emboldened. A Gopher or Garter Snake can be repatriated to the hillside, but if that snake rattles, report it to us immediately. Bobcats are skittish and don’t like to be seen, but a mountain lion is a predator and will stalk what it perceives to be a meal source! Take caution and look around campus for signs of wild life!
Included in this week’s family envelope is information about the upcoming California Shakeout on Thursday October 19. We take precautions at school to ensure the disciplined evacuation routines in the event of a real emergency. Please take a moment to review the enclosed literature. Are you ready at home for an extreme earthquake event? Now is the time to review your safety plan and resources. It’s never too early to be prepared. Let us never forget that mother Earth continues to cool from its earliest origins! That is one, awesome factoid!
My fellow duffers, please ensure your participation in the annual St. Francis Xavier School Golf Classic! Need a sign-up brochure? Feel free to email me or Mrs. Konzen and we’ll send one home with your child. You can still sign up for hole-sponsorships as well as provide donations for the raffle. Hours for raffle prizes are awarded by $25 increments for donations. We thank you in advance for your participation and help!
I hope you enjoy the family atmosphere at this weekend’s annual Jog-A-Thon. Thank you to our chairpersons Erin Barrows and Kris Smith, to Janet Ward and Nancy Willard for their in-house support, to you dear parents for your efforts and to our dear students who fill the track with their contagious enthusiasm! God bless you for a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Paul Sullivan, Ed.D.

High School Night 2 002

principals message
Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier School,
I hope and trust this message finds you well. Once again our nation finds itself grappling with unimaginable horror in the wake of the carnage in Las Vegas last Sunday night. By all accounts the students of our school appear fine and sound. For our youngest students life moves from moment to moment and they are blissfully unaware of the circumstances surrounding the episode. For the older children some have expressed their shock about what they have learned about the incident. I wish I could explain that Wednesday’s Lock-Down drill is a simple formality, but given the dynamics of wonton gun violence across America these types of drills are imperative to rehearse and understand.
If anything were to affect the daily operation of school in any violent way, all of the classrooms and parish offices are notified by the code, “Mother Cabrini.” When teachers and students hear the code, the school goes into immediate lock down. Doors are closed and locked. Window blinds are drawn and classroom door windows are covered. The students and teachers take cover on the floors of the classrooms. After two minutes have passed in the drill, an alert of “Stand-by” is given and the students and teachers may return to their seats. Finally, an “All Clear” message is sent to return to normal operations. I know our community’s hopes and prayers are that we will never have to utilize this drill in a real event of intrusion, but we practice “Lock Down Drill” to ensure the safety of all of us at school.
On a lighter note, Wednesday is also the annual Blessing of the Animals. The students love this celebration, as they get to observe the variety of pets that are brought to Fr. Benny for a blessing. Of course many students join their family members and pets in the blessing line! It’s always a lot of fun to observe our pets receiving the blessing of holy water! We look forward to seeing you at the ceremony.
The faculty, staff and student body recently kicked off another year of “Character Counts!” We gathered in Holy Cross Hall to observe students and teachers perform skits to demonstrate the six pillars of character, which include Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Following each skit, I called upon our youngest students to tell the entire student body what they observed! They were spot on with their answers. I made the point to the older children that if our TK and kindergarten students can understand these concepts clearly, then so can the rest of us! Out of the mouths of babes! And it’s true! Everything we need to know in this life we learn in kindergarten! Special shout out to second and third grades for their hilarious skit! This month of October we are all working on the pillar of Trustworthiness!
For the record, the most recent version of the Parent/Student Handbook is on-line. There are probably various, earlier iterations of the document in hard-copy floating around the community. But please know that we are guided by the current, on-line version on the school’s website. Dress code issues are assessed by the teachers and staff daily. We have recently re-designed the school’s notice to families to correct any dress code issues, from uniform to hair style. If and when you receive a notice asking you to correct an issue for your child, please know we are trying to be consistent to enforce the SFX student dress code. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
The Girls A Volleyball team is currently 2-3 after a very tough loss at De Sales on Tuesday. The girls played well, rallying from a 1-0 deficit early to force a decisive game three, but came up short 17-15 in the final game. The girls play at St. Finbar on Thursday 10/5 at 3:45 PM! Go Lancers! We host two Girls B volleyball matches Wednesday and Thursday on the SFX Sport Court! Both matches begin at 3:45 PM. Come on out to cheer the girls! Go Lancers! Boys B Football has their first game this Saturday at 1:00 PM at Brace Canyon Park! Go Lancers!
The SFX Junior High Mock Trial program is officially underway. The team attorneys meet Thursday 10/4 at 7:15 AM to review the details of a murder case! I look forward to the weeks ahead to observe our students’ critical thinking and case development.
The Junior High Academic Decathlon Team is taking shape. There are 10 applicants and the team will receive its individual assignments soon. It won’t be long until the team gathers twice weekly to begin studying logic and super quiz questions!
For junior high families, don’t forget that we host the annual High School Night on Wednesday October 11 from 7:00-8:30 PM in Holy Cross Hall. Our school community will be joined by the communities of St. Robert Bellarmine and St. Finbar. We will host once again 14 high school admission’s teams to present valuable information about our local Catholic high schools. I hope to see you there.
This past Saturday, Mr. Patrick Flynn was laid to rest. We hold dearly Patrick’s memory at SFX, and transition to assist the Flynn family in every way possible. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Flynn and the children. We also hold closely in our thoughts and prayers all those who are challenged with their health. We ask the power of the Holy Spirit to provide healing comfort and strength during these most difficult times.
God bless you dear parents. Thank you for making St. Francis Xavier School and Parish a priority for your family. As members of the people of God we embark daily in response to his will in our lives. Let us remain open to this call and be ready to help others in need.
Sincerely,
Paul Sullivan, Ed.D.
