Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier School,
I hope the recent heat wave hasn’t wilted your spirits! This too shall pass. We have had to stay indoors the past few days due to the heat and poor air quality. Windy weather will undoubtedly continue to create unhealthy air-quality conditions in the wake of the fire. We will be on guard for such occasions.
We are anxiously awaiting news of the Girls A Volleyball team’s playoff berth. The team has made it to the field of 64 and will more than likely play this weekend at a high school gym to be announced later this afternoon. We will announce the information as soon as we learn it! Go Lancers!
The Girls B Volleyball teams are doing quite well. While we had to cancel the match scheduled for Monday 10/23 between SFX 1 and SFX 2 due to the heat, SFX 2 will travel to Sherman Oaks to play St. Francis DeSales today. The make-up date for the canceled match is scheduled for Thursday 11/2! Come out to see our fifth and sixth grade girls play their best volleyball! Quite a few matches remain before the season ends. Announcements will made made to support the teams! Go Lancers!
Boys B Flag Football is going well. While the boys have a record of 1-2 they are determined to get back in the hunt for a winning season. The lads play this Saturday at Noon at Brace Canyon Park. Go Lancers!
Both Mock Trial and Academic Decathlon are in full swing! The Mock Trial Team will present the defense in a murder trial on Monday 11/6 at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. Our prosecution team goes for the jugular the following week, Monday 11/13. The decathletes began the first of several early morning practices today. The march to March 4 is officially underway. As one from South Boston would say, “These kids are wicked smart!” Go Lancers!
This Saturday is destined to be “spooktacular!” Family Activities Chair, Jason Murtha and his band of merry supporters will host the annual Trunk or Treat in Holy Cross Hall beginning at 6:30 PM. This event is always a joy for our younger students! They gather in the hall for some fun food and awesome dancing! The participating cars and trucks in the Trunk or Treat program are parked on the upper lot and decorated to the nines to invite visitors to inspect all of the costume themes! Visitors will also receive some CANDY!!! Of course the junior high students are also invited to attend! It will undoubtedly be a very fun evening. A friendly reminder for those who like to dress in scary attire, please don’t frighten the youngest students in attendance. We recall how impressionable young minds can be. We want everyone going home ready for bed in a good mood! Let’s avoid influencing any nightmares!
Tuesday October 31 is a NOON DISMISSAL day due to Halloween. In the morning, the Student Council will host the annual Halloween Parade, which begins at 10:45 AM. Please join us on the lower yard if your schedule permits to observe the many children who dress up to mark one of their favorite days of the year! Parking is available on the upper lot and is easily accessed via the west driveway. We hope to see you there!
Wednesday November 1 commemorates All Saints Day. The student body will celebrate Mass with Fr. Benny at 2:00 PM in the church. Please join us if you your schedule permits.
The faculty and I will attend the third professional development workshop at St. Mel’s School, Woodland Hills on Friday November 3. Please note that Friday November 3 is a NON-PUPIL DAY.
The teachers have employed many ideas gleaned from the workshops into their daily classroom routines. Chief among the ideas is the use of “objective boards.” Students and teachers review clearly stated objectives for each lesson throughout the day. The goal is to create clear understanding of what is being taught and learned in any given lesson. The more connected the children are to the objective of a lesson the more meaning they can derive from their participation in class.
The second benchmark window for STAR testing opens November 1 and runs through November 15. The teachers will schedule the testing sessions for their classes within the window at their discretion. Results will probably be available after the first trimester report card period. We are hopeful to observe excellent scores. The Department of Catholic Schools has set the lofty percentile score of 64 as a base benchmark. The score is set at the 64th percentile as a measure of college readiness, even for our youngest students. While nobody has a crystal ball to determine the extent of our students’ achievement through their adolescence, the research derived on our behalf from the DCS tells us that students scoring at or above the 64th percentile are on their way to academic accomplishment and success.
My dear parents, YOU have a lot to do with student scores too! Your continued support and engagement of your child’s development will always pay dividends. We at school support you. And the students, who know they are loved and supported both at home and at school, provide the rest! How blessed we are to be a Catholic learning community! We are part of the hundreds of years-old Catholic tradition of academic accomplishment! Be sure to encourage your child to take their time during testing sessions. While there are some students who loathe the process, they cannot do their best if they are rushing through the sessions. We see a time stamp on their sessions, so we’ll know if they take the testing seriously. Low scores and a time stamp of 9 min. 34 sec. explains a lot! So encourage your Johnnies and Suzies to take their time. Each test affords 35 minutes of time to take the tests. We thank you in advance!
Bob’s Big Boy Dinner Fundraiser is tonight, Wednesday October 25! Do you want onion rings or fries with that Super Big Boy Combo? Have fun with friends and family in support of our dear school!
Don’t forget Night at the Races, scheduled for Saturday November 4 in Holy Cross Hall! It is a very amusing evening to say the least! Where else can you bet on races that have already been run? Doors open at 6:30 PM. The bar is set up in a unique fashion. The drinks are excellent! You can pay to name a horse in any given race. And the idea is to use your funny-money to bet on the pre-recorded races, with the horses who have been uniquely christened by attendees (wait until you hear some of the names!), and winners place their names into a raffle for a variety of very impressive gift baskets. All proceeds go to supporting our dear parish! Fr. Benny is expecting you.
Let us pray for one another. The challenges raising a family are constant and our days can be filled with all sorts of obstacles. Let us pray for each other to patient, kind, aware, and sensitive to the needs of others. A simple kind word or gesture might be all it takes to help us through the rough patches. For those who are fighting illness, we ask God to deliver you to full health. For those who are sad, we ask the Holy Spirit to remind you of the joy of your life. For those who are unsettled, we ask God to bring you peace. For these things and more, we pray to the Lord.
Sincerely,
Paul Sullivan, Ed.D.

hALLOWEEN PARADE WORDS
Student Council Hosts Halloween Parade
Student Council Members are busy planning some fun activities for the Halloween Parade to be held Tuesday, October 31, 2017 beginning at 10:45 A.M. We are planning to have the Parade on the Lower School Yard. If it is too hot or rains, it will be held in Holy Cross Hall. All students may come to school dressed in their costumes. Extra items, or oversized costumes, may be added at recess time. Parents, please check, in advance, with your child’s homeroom teacher regarding any need to assist students in putting on any final touches before the Parade. Also, please remember the following guidelines for your child’s costume at school:
1. Masks may be included, however due to safety reasons, the children are to put them on only when it is time to parades around the yard.
2. Props may accompany your child's costume except for knives, guns, or any other weapon.
3. Please help your child choose an age appropriate costume as well as one which is supportive of Catholic School standards.

Last Friday could not have been more perfect for all of our golfers at our 9th Annual SFX Golf Tournament. The weather was beautiful, groups of friends competed to see who would win the tournament and there was plenty of drink and food afterward to celebrate! Thank you so much to Scott Scozzola and Joaquin Herbozo for making our big fundraiser a hit! Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked to help to make this event a success!
