8th Annual SFX Golf Classic

Friday, October 21, 2016

September 15, 2016
Dear Families and Friends of SFX,
The 8th Annual SFX Golf Classic Tournament at DeBell Golf Club will take place on Friday, October 21, 2016. Mark your calendars, save the date, and put in for the day off! You do not want to miss out on this wonderful event!
Our Annual Golf Classic fundraiser is a great opportunity to gather together for a fun day on the golf course, and raise money for our school at the same time. When has fundraising ever been easier or more enjoyable?
The Golf Classic Committee is seeking support from our parents, parishioners, faculty and staff, alumni and friends of St. Francis Xavier. There are several opportunities in which to participate and offer your support. You may choose to play in the tournament, sponsor a hole, donate a raffle prize, or dare I say commit to all of the offered opportunities. However you choose to participate, know we are most grateful for your support. It is our greatest hope to have every school family participate in the Golf Classic in some way.
It is our goal to host 144 players this year. Please help us meet our goal! Come one, come all! Foursomes, threesomes, doubles, singles and every skill level are welcome! Grab your friends, family members, co-workers, or neighbors and register to play.
Please see the brochure that was sent home in the Family Envelope on September 1, for your entry form, sponsorship opportunities as well as general information and all deadlines.
Please know this is a wonderful way to earn your PSA hours. PSA hours will be earned for playing, sponsoring a hole, as well as all donations.
Thank you very much for your support and generosity of the SFX Golf Classic.
Sincerely,
Janet Ward -jwlikescake@yahoo.com

Dear Parents,
In today’s world, peace needs to be more than just a word. Today’s students are bombarded with television images, video games, magazine articles, and newspaper headlines that give importance to conflict and war. Violence has become commonplace and accepted as part of our society. It is our hope that through the Peace Flag Project, we can help the students make a public, visual statement of their feelings about war, peace, tolerance, cooperation, harmony, and unity, and in some way, awaken the public and let them know what the next generation is thinking.
This is not political. Peace doesn’t have to be part of a debate about war, violence in our society, or disharmony. Peace can be discussed in the context of positive collaboration. To each of us, peace can take on a different meaning, but, in the end, it all comes down to a simple definition: a state of calmness and serenity, free from conflict or disagreement among people or groups of people.
The students of St. Francis Xavier School will spend the afternoons during the week of September 19th on an introspective, spiritual, and artistic journey embracing the theme of peace. A pinwheel is a childhood symbol – it reminds us of a time when things were simple, joyful, and peaceful. Students in TK, Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade will write prayers to attach to their pinwheels of various shapes and sizes as part of the creative process. Students in Grades 3rd through 8th will participate in the Peace Flag Project. The students will write their thoughts about peace, tolerance, and living in harmony with others on one side using poetry, prose, haiku, or other age appropriate writing styles. On the other side, the students will draw, paint, or collage to visually express their feelings.

The students will assemble on September 21, 2016, International Day of Peace, to “plant” their pinwheels outside the school and view their Peace Flag Project. We will gather in church at 2:15 P.M. for a simple prayer service. The spinning of the pinwheels and the flapping of flags in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the city, country, and world! Our Peace Flag Project will be a visual reminder that we live in one world and all share similar hopes and dreams.
Peace,
The Faculty and Staff of St. Francis Xavier School
“If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our society, will benefit from our peace.”

Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier School,
Holy cow school is one busy, bustling place of learning, assessing, creating, meeting, practicing, organizing and a whole lot more! How are you? I hope and trust you are doing well and anticipating a robust September! The teachers and students are working very hard!
Some school uniform news. I was alerted by Mrs. Dawn Castro last year and early this year that the school logo on all polo shirts stands up well when done with embroidery as opposed to the decal or stamp used to adorn the shirts. For only $3.50 additional, you may ask Mr. Shane Clark, long-time SFX parent and Crown Uniform owner, to embroider the school’s logo on polo shirts. Also, Mr. Clark has the school’s approval to provide a long-sleeved polo shirt for use during cooler weather. Inquire with Mr. Clark about these new developments. Thank you to both Mrs. Dawn Castro for alerting me to embroidery and to Mr. Clark for his ability to offer these new features and items.
Decathlon News: For those junior high students interested in Academic Decathlon, a packet of information was sent home with the students to review with families the overview of the program and the needed hours of commitment for the team. A deadline of Friday September 16 is set for submission of student persuasive essays to help the Decathlon committee select the team. Additionally, the teacher recommendation form will be due on the same date. Interested students should submit their teacher recommendation forms to their preferred teacher with enough time to meet the deadline. The team roster will be announced before the close of the month.
Mock Trial: The case is announced today at 3:00 P.M. I will review the case and make the necessary selection of interested students as attorneys, defendant, expert and eye-witnesses, bailiff, time keeper, etc. The team roster will be announced on Monday September 12.
My dear junior high families please know that we wish to provide as many students as possible the opportunity to participate in both or either Academic Decathlon and/or Mock Trial. We have talented students galore in our junior high but limited spaces for participation in the aforementioned programs. If your child does not receive the placement they hope for, they will be offered an opportunity to “shadow” the program at meetings and practices. Their efforts in this capacity will help ensure strong consideration for future participation.
Robotics: I sent home quite recently the roster of interested students and families about participation in the robotics program. My apologies to those kindergarten families who will receive through their child today the robotics update. I only confirmed the details yesterday afternoon. If for any reason any family decides not to participate please email me at your earliest convenience so that I may update the official roster and alert the teachers. We are set to begin the classes in the lower building Friday September 9!
CYO Sports: The “A” varsity teams, grades seven and eight, are up and running. Boys A Flag Football is practicing with Coaches Graceffo and Perez, and I, your humble, limited volleyball coach, Dr. Sullivan leads the Girls A Volleyball squad. The league meeting for coaches takes place this afternoon and a full schedule of games and matches will be shared soon. The “B” programs, grades five and six, will take shape next week. Mr. Mike Magallon, Boys B Flag Football coach and Mr. Clark McKnight, Girls B Volleyball coach will announce initial gatherings to take place next week. I am to meet with both coaches Friday September 9 and will announce to the children the practice dates. Please discuss these forthcoming dates with your interested student athlete.
Undoubtedly I am leaving out some important update or other pressing item. Please forgive me but I must attend to some classroom matters. While it’s quite busy around these parts, it sure is invigorating! That’s because we are St. Francis Xavier. We are Lancers!
May the Lord God send upon you and your families every blessing to assist us in our daily lives. May we feel his love through his son Jesus Christ and take refuge in the Holy Spirit as we address the pressing challenges we face. I ask this on our behalf. Amen.
Sincerely,
Paul Sullivan, Ed.D.

PTO news
Hey everyone,
It was great seeing everyone last week. I just wanted to take this opportunity to provide some more information about some of the events we really didn’t have time to discuss.
Let’s start with the Introduction to Archery. The dates are September 24th and October 29TH. This event will take place in Lower Arroyo Park in Pasadena and is organized by the Pasadena Roving Archers. The times are from 12:00 - 2:30pm. This costs $25 per participant and includes all instruction and equipment. This event is for both adults and children. If you are interested please send an email to theprezsfx@gmail.com and let me know who will be participating and for which date. There are only 20 spaces available per class so please let me know as soon as you can.
We have the Outdoor Picture Show happening in the Holy Cross Hall parking lot on September 17th. The featured movie is Zootopia and it starts at sundown. Everything is only $1 (Entrance fee, burgers, dogs, chips, soda, water, popcorn, and candy) with the exceptions of beer and wine. Please bring your lawn chairs and a blanket to throw down on the ground. This is fun for the whole family!!!!
Our SFX Halloween Dance is on October 29th in Holy Cross Hall Starting at 6:30. We will have more details as we get closer to the date but want to reach out because we need volunteers for our annual Trunk or Treat event. Over the past couple years, families have decorated their vehicles to represent their respective classes. This is really the highlight of the evening. We also get to vote on a favorite Trunk or Treat costume. The winning vehicle gets a trophy and earns their class a free dress day. The more vehicles we have the more memorable it will be for our children. It takes time to plan and gather all materials needed so we wanted to get you some advanced notice. If you are interested please email SFXHalloweenDance@gmail.com. We hope to have every class represented this year.
The last weekend of Easter Break we have a family camping trip. This year from April 21st to April 23rd we will be heading to Lake Casitas. We have been here the last two years and it has been a really big hit. We are booking early because the campground will reserve the sites for us before they release them to the public. We provide two dinners, a community breakfast, movie night (weather permitting) and a ton of fun!!!!! We have grown over the past two years from 16 to 38 families. There is space for up to 60 reserved sites. We need to send confirmation to the campground no later than October 17th. I really hope you can join us. Even if you have never camped before, you will love it.
Thank you for your time and as always if you have any questions please feel free to email me at theprezsfx@gmail.com.

Greetings Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier School,
Welcome to the close of August and the opening of September! We look to the Labor Day weekend for some fun and interesting family activities! Perhaps the BBQ at the house is ready for one last hurrah to officially say goodbye to summer!
I am grateful to the PTO Board members who commit themselves to the fundraising goals of the school community. We gathered on Wednesday evening to officially adopt a budget and finalize other details for the year. President Bill Wikersheim and the PTO Board officers will outline their ambitious agenda this evening at Back-To-School Night in Holy Cross Hall at 7:00 P.M.
Following the PTO Board presentations, the teachers will host 15 minute overviews in their classrooms for the school year. Junior high presentations will take place in Holy Cross Hall. TK and Kindergarten will present in their rooms in the lower building. Grades on through five will host in their rooms in the upper building.
Extra-curricular programs are taking shape. The Chessnuts leaders visited the school yesterday and spoke to the children about the chess program. Interested children took home a course overview to parents. CYO Sports are underway at the “A” or varsity level (grades seven and eight). Coaches Graceffo and Perez lead the Boys A Flag Football Team. I, Dr. Paul, will lead the Girls A Volleyball team.
The Boys B Flag Football team will be coached by Mr. Michael Magallon, while the Girls B Volleyball team will be coached by Mr. Clark McKnight.
The robotics classes are almost finalized, but I can share the plan! First, the bad news: We did not field enough interest to host the programming class for grades seven and eight. We will try again for the second trimester! The good news is that we will be able to host two concurrent DINO classes for students in grades K through three thereby serving the needs of all interested students and families. Additionally, we will host one SEAL class for grades four through six. We look to start on Friday September 9 from 1:05-2:05 P.M. There are eight classes in all at $17 per class. I’ll send home the details after finalizing the plan with the company. If you missed out on signing up for this trimester, you will have another opportunity following the holiday season.
Academic Decathlon is chaired by yours truly, assisted by Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Zakowski and a group of dedicated parents, Mrs. Rose Sorensen, Mrs. Ellen Petty, Mr. Jose Sanchez and Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Flynn. We are in the early phases of identifying interest and selecting a team. I’ll be sharing more news about decathlon as the program develops.
The Mock Trial team is also in a developmental phase. We are officially registered and the tem will be selected by me after the Labor Day weekend!
KidsArt and Sewing are set to begin the week of Labor Day and Chessnuts will begin on Monday September 12!
Holy cow that’s a lot of goings-on for St. Francis Xavier School! We have these programs to offer in addition to the daily instruction in the classrooms! We are successful for a variety of reasons, the most important of which is tied to your own expectations for your children. Parents who set the tone for accountability and responsibility in the home are the true primary educators of their children. When the children know that mom and dad are expecting optimal effort, the students know to put forth their best. This year won’t be any different. Great parenting and teaching is happening at St. Francis Xavier! Our students will find success in their studies and in their efforts in the extra-curricular programs offered.
Don’t look now, but progress reporting occurs at the end of September! Wow! Don’t be reluctant to remind the children! Let’s keep them working hard to achieve their goals!
By the time I address the community this evening, we will have experienced our first school liturgy. In the selected Gospel, Jesus explains to those in his audience that the kingdom of God is like a treasure buried in a field, and that once discovered, that person buys that field. We too have a treasure. Our treasure is the student body of our school, and the parents, faculty and staff who work together on behalf of the student body. We are supported and nourished through the Catholic identity of our church, led by Fr. Benny, and assisted by Deacons Jim, Jaime and Tony, not to mention countless other ministry leaders. Together we comprise a dynamic community dedicated to supporting all of its members in body, mind and spirit. Enjoy the Labor Day weekend!
Sincerely,
Paul Sullivan, Ed.D.
